Can I Install Solar Myself?

DIY solar installation is not recommended for grid-tied systems in Pakistan, since NEPRA certification and IESCO net metering require a certified installer.

Technically you can buy panels and attempt a DIY installation, but it is not recommended for a grid-tied system in Islamabad or Rawalpindi. Connecting to the grid and applying for net metering requires NEPRA-compliant equipment and certified installation, and most DISCOs will not approve a net-metering application for a self-installed system. There are also real electrical and structural safety risks involved in rooftop solar work.

Why Grid-Tied Solar Isn't a DIY Project

  • Net metering requires IESCO approval, which depends on certified equipment and technical documentation like the single-line diagram.
  • Grid-tied inverters must be installed and configured correctly to avoid backfeeding faults during outages, which is a safety issue for utility workers.
  • Improper mounting can void panel or workmanship warranties, including the 25-year panel performance warranty.

What Can Go Wrong With DIY Installation

Beyond paperwork rejection, common DIY mistakes include incorrect roof penetration and waterproofing, undersized cabling that creates fire risk, poor grounding, and panel layouts that ignore shading — all of which reduce output or shorten equipment life. A 10-year workmanship warranty and 6-month repair warranty from a certified installer exist precisely to cover issues that self-installation would leave unprotected.

Where Smaller DIY Setups Can Work

Small, off-grid kits — for example a portable panel charging a single battery for basic backup — carry lower risk and do not require grid connection or net-metering approval. Once you are talking about a rooftop system tied into your home's electrical panel, though, professional installation is the safer and more practical route.

Working With a Certified Installer

Tripower is NEPRA certified and IESCO-approved, handling design, documentation, installation and commissioning as one process, backed by warranties across panels, inverters and workmanship. Contact us for a free site survey, or see our full solar installation service details.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will IESCO approve net metering for a self-installed system?

Generally no. Net metering approval depends on certified equipment and technical documentation that self-installed systems typically cannot provide.

Is DIY installation cheaper in the long run?

It can look cheaper upfront, but voided warranties, rejected net-metering applications, and potential rework often cost more than professional installation.

Can I do some of the work myself, like clearing roof access?

Yes, preparing roof access and providing documents ahead of time is helpful and something homeowners can reasonably handle themselves.
